During the period of humanism and renaissance a new feeling for life was born, which turns toward man in this world, which awakes the classical antiquity to a new life and makes of it an ideal form of human life and an ideal way of cultivation of the spirit. This feeling finds its place in modern philosophical thinking, in which the bowing to a subject is remarkable. Therefore the clear anthropological line can be seen in the philosophical thinking, and not only in the philosophical thinking but in theology also, which is more and more nurtured by God’s word and which became a service to God’s word, that word, which is said to man in the middle of his human history. In this stream also Karol Wojtyła, the present Pope John Paul II, develops his thinking.
In the biographical note in the beginning of my work I present a short biography of John Paul II, which is focused on the development of his thinking and on the three important encounters which had the principal influence on him. In the first place it was the encounter with the mystics of St. John of the Cross, which his dissertation Doctrine de Fide apud S. Ioannem de Cruce is about. Then it was the encounter with the philosophy of the Thomists in Bocheński’s book The ABC’s of Thomism and finally the encounter with the phenomenology of Max Scheler. In his habilitation Wojtyła polemicizes with Scheler and so the crystallisation of his anthropology is advanced. He presents it in the work Person and Act.
In the first part I indicate four starting points and sources of the anthropological streaming in which also the adequate anthropology of Karol Wojtyła takes an honourable place. In the first place it is the biblical anthropology. I pay attention to its basic features, because during centuries this anthropology has formed Christian thinking, in which the deep sense of the concept “person“ has its source. In the second place, it is a view into the modern philosophical anthropology, which entertains the problem of man as a person. In the third place, I draw in some lines the anthropology of Karol Wojtyła, who is the creator of the adequate anthropology. And finally, in the fourth place, I introduce the wide stream of the anthropology of Vatican II, which got an expressive form in the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes about the Church in the present world. These streams finally create the wide stream, which creates the basic anthropological line in the encyclicals of John Paul II. This stream sometimes ascends to the surface, but sometimes it is hidden for being a girder in the depths of theological thinking.
In the second part, which is divided into seven chapters, I aspire to give a synthesis of the basic anthropological line in the encyclicals of John Paul II, and how it is already announced in the program encyclical Redemptor hominis. The basic starting point for understanding man is the biblical picture of two reports on the creation of human being and its analysis in the integral conception of man. The human being is created to live for God and for other people. The only possibility to understand man is in Jesus Christ. The basis of human dignity is in the reality that man is created on the image of God and in the redemption. In redemption man finds his very greatness, dignity and the value of human rights. Because of this the first and the most basic right is the religious freedom. The right for the realisation of man’s relationship to God. Man develops his likeness in the image of God in the middle of the world through various activities. Work has a special place among them. Freedom, which is so highly evaluated today, can be developed only in the area of truth and responsibility. However, the pinacle of human freedom is the freedom of the children of God, which Jesus Christ granted to man when he set him free of the slavery of sin and death. From the very beginning of his existence the human being is situated in the net of social relationships and only through this net can he fully develop himself as a man. He is born in a group of people which becomes real concrete and most basic in the family. The family creates the most original social structure in which the particular vocation of women, motherhood, is exalted. The principles of the social doctrine of the Church are emphasised again as they were proclaimed by Leo XIII.
Man through the act of the Creator is in a relationship of dialogue with God, as a partner of this dialogue, and at the same time in the social relationship to other human persons. John Paul II continuously develops the dialogue in the Church, the dialogue with the separate Christians, and also the dialogue with the world as Vatican II had already done. John Paul II continuously develops the doctrine of the council as it was lapidarily expressed: “Creation becomes extinct without a Creator. By forgetting God, creation disposes itself of light. Man is no more able to perceive himself as someone mysteriously different, and in a certain way he becomes a thing and loses the ability to understand the transcendental character of his existence as a human being.” The focusing of man on God is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, because in him the perfect synthesis of anthropocentrism and theocentrism becomes true. Man finds in the mystery of Christ’s cross the answer for the most difficult human problems, for the problem of sin and death, for the problem of suffering and sorrow. God stays always on the side of those who suffer, however Christ – the man of sorrows – is the revelation of Love which bears all things, which endures all things. Jesus Christ is the definite answer for the painful problems of man. However man has his full and definite responsibility before God. Man is called to the fullness of life, which overcomes the dimensions of his earthly existence, because this life resides in the participation of the very life of God. This is vocation and commitment also, this is gift and duty, this is freedom and responsibility.
In conclusion, I indicate the need to develop the Christian anthropology as an answer to the devastation of man caused by the ideology of Marxists, I indicate several topics of further searching and also the need for a more profound study of the encyclicals of John Paul II and of the documents of Vatican II. |
