The Homiletically Instructions : From the History of the Homiletic in Moravia, Bohemia and Slovakia

Church has always realised a huge importance of using all means to preach the Gospel. One of the means is publishing periodicals, which are intended to defend beliefs and protect good Catholic morals, as it is documented in memorandum of Czech and Moravian bishops. The memorandum was addressed to the Imperial council (Ríšsky snem), which started in Vienna on 10 July 1848.
One of those who supported this idea most was Dr. Ján Emanuel Veith (1788 – 1846), who together with Šebastián Brunner established the Catholic Unity (Katolícka jednota) in Vienna in 1848. The Catholic Unity organised lectures and also helped lonely Czech young people, for whom established the Czech Sunday school.
Olomouc unity of the clergy (Olomoucká jednota duchovenstva) helped to found the first Olomouc homiletically periodical with the aim to work-out homilies and sermons for priests and help them to find the way to the hearts of believers. Bourdaluo, who was the author of homilies and genius of French language, thought that a well-prepared homily could attract believers and they would take part in reading and listening to the Word of God with pleasure.
In Olomouc there was a very good group of priests who following Christ’s altruism decided to take part in preparing a homiletically magazine. The main goal of this magazine was helping priests to preach the Gospel. The first Olomouc homiletically periodical was called The Sacred Pulpit (Posvátná kazatelna). It started to be published in 1864 as the first homiletically periodical in Moravia and Bohemia. The magazine was published twice a year and helped all the Czecho-Slovak Catholic clergy.
Next magazine was published quarterly under the title The Preacher (Kazatel) and its aim was “to serve the brethren” („sloužit spolubratřím”).
It started to be published in 1894 by Olomouc unity of the clergy for Olomouc and Prague archbishoprics and dioceses in Brno and České Budějovice.
On 14th November 1934 the Priest Committee of Unity of the clergy (Výbor kňazskej Jednoty duchovenstva) change the title of the periodical into The Catholic Preacher (Katolický kazatel), but the German occupation and Protectorate stopped its official publishing. After that it was published illegally under the title The Word of God (Slovo Boží). Its issues were published in 1942 – 1946.
After the liberation of our country another magazine under the title The Preacher (Kazatel) was published in Olomouc as a supplement of The Gazette of Unity of the Clergy (Věstník jednot duchovenstva). Its editor Josef Kunický devoted himself to his work. His aim was to serve the others. But in former Czecho-Slovakia there was time of beginning communist regime when nobody was interested in his work and there was no interest to preach the Gospel. The regime repressed cruelly any attempt to publish religious freedom. In the Czecho-Slovak Republic religion became for communists an ideological enemy number one.
And so The Sacred Pulpit (Posvátná kazatelna) was published in 1864 – 1893 and later as The Preacher (Kazatel) in 1894 – 1934 had 38 volumes. It survived the fall of the Austria-Hungarian monarchy and was published during the World War I as well as at the time of so called “First Republic” (Czecho-Slovakia), when its title was The Catholic Preacher (Katolický kazatel). Its nine volumes (XXXIX – XLVII) were published in 1934 – 1941 and it was also published illegally as The Word of God (Slovo Boží) in 1942 – 1945 and had four volumes.
After the war the fifth version of the same Olomouc homiletically periodical was published as The Preacher (Kazatel), a homiletically supplement of The Gazette of Unity of the Clergy (Věstník jednot duchovenstva). Any attempt to continue the magazine after 1948 failed. On September 18th 1948 the editor of the Olomouc homiletically magazine Josef Kunický was arrested and sent to prison. After eighty-four years it was the end of one great period in history of homiletic in Olomouc.
The second period started again in Olomouc in 1970 after 22 years. A unique homiletically periodical The Homiletically Instructions (Homiletické směrnice) was established. Its influence on the Church in the communistic Czecho-Slovakia was really great. But the magazine was founded at the time of communist totalize and that was why it could not develop freely as for the contents, topics, staff and theology.
All the plans to start its publishing are connected with the names of Josef Kunický (1915 – 1969), Dr. Josef Bradáč (1920 – 1986), Ladislav Simajchl and Miloslav Klisz. They all introduced the idea to publish the magazine at the time of great expectations of so called Prague spring (Pražská jar) in 1968. They fully developed the abilities given to them by God and did their best for God, Church and their nation.
This work is about the magazine The Homiletically Instructions (Homiletické směrnice) the establishment of which was first of all the result of the development after the Second Vatican Council. The Council introduced a number of changes in religious services. The liturgical reform changed the order of mass and first of all the order of readings of Sundays and feast liturgy at the three-year cycle, the readings of the ferial liturgy in Ordinary time were distributed to two-year cycle, the readings of the ferial liturgy at Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter were shaped at one-year cycle. The liturgical reform touched the order of sacraments, funerals, liturgical services, adoration and catechesis during the prayer service of the Church. The Second Vatican Council emphasized an inclination to the homily. Therefore it was necessary to try living in a daily pastoral with the spirit of liturgical reform and deepen Christian life of believers. After the Council the process of developing of liturgical life in dioceses and parishes and formation of the clergy was supported by publishing the homiletically periodical in Olomouc.
In this work the author tried to compile the history of homiletically periodicals in the Czech and Slovak Republic with a special respect to the Olomouc homiletic in Moravia. There The Homiletic Instructions (Homiletické směrnice) as a unique and the only magazine of its kind is still published under the title Fermentum. We can see the connection between it and the heritage of lots of authors, first of all editors of homiletically periodicals. In Slovakia it was Monsignor Dr. F. R. Osvald, in Bohemia Monsignor F. B. Vaněk as well as Monsignor Miloslav Klisz.
Although the communist dictatorship repressed priests and free religious life, it was not successful in its effort. Priests especially were strictly controlled by the state power. Nowadays during the worship they are turned face to face with believers, they give their homily not on the pulpit but on ambo which means they are closer to people and use the language more understandable for people. All these facts caused a huge explosion in preaching the Gospel. Priests “preached the Word of God with more courage” (Sk 4,31). The Christian faith is still alive but as a result of intimidating atheistically process the number of believers has declined and therefore in lots of regions it is necessary to use the words of our Master to sustain: “Don’t be afraid a little flock as your Father liked it to give you the kingdom.” (Lk 12,32) “And look, I am together with you for all days until the end of the world.“ (Mt 28,20)
