The Structure of Byzantine “Orthros” according to the XIVth Century “Taxis tôn Akolouthiôn” Musical Manuscripts Present book is divided into five chapters. The first one bears the title “A History of Development of the Akolouthiai Manuscripts”. After an introduction to the historical context, which is a condition “sine qua non” for any understanding of historical events of time when liturgical and musical changes occurred in the manuscripts, follows a description of parent manuscripts to the akolouthia manuscript (according to the scholars such as Dimitri Conomos, Miloš Velimirović, Egon Wellesz). The chapter ends with the description of a new born manuscript of akolouthia. The second chapter entitled “Sources” presents three types of sources used in the present work. The first place occupies the musical manuscripts of akolouthia. In the course of work some 23 manuscripts dated from 1336 AD (EBE 2458 – the earliest extant akolouthia ms) up to the 1795 AD (one of the latest akolouthia ms) has been surveyed. The research itself then focused on seven manuscripts that cover the time range from 1336 AD until 1453 AD, i.e. the very year of the fall of Constantinople. All surveyed akolouthia manuscripts suggest rare conformity in their scheme. The second type of sources that offer valuable information about developments of time are the liturgical commentaries and manuals of Simeon of Thessalonica, Philotteos Kokkinos, and Marcos Eugenicos. The third type of source are the editions of the Eucologies – book of prayers for bishop and priest, necessary for the celebration of Eucharistic liturgies, hours and other services. The third chapter bears the title “The Byzantine Orthros”. This chapter presents liturgical scheme derived from the musical manuscripts. It offers also some schematic differences of studied manuscripts. The output of this chapter is presented by the reduced scheme of orthros derived from the liturgical commentaries and a manual. As before, here are presented some schematic differences too. Such differences depended on free selection of each author of studied source. The third scheme is derived from the eucologies. The conclusive part of the chapter offers comparative table that presents a general picture of the scheme of liturgy of orthros as reflected in the musical manuscripts, liturgical commentaries and manuals of time. The fourth chapter is entitled “The Music in the Akolouthiai”. The historical musical elements are studied here. In this chapter are described also some substantial changes that occurred in the liturgical music in 14th century. Majority of the information we have about the music of Byzantine Empire today seems purely hypothetical. Hence, the credibility of the present research and verity of outputs presented here must be apprehended in the light of the objective possibilities offered by contemporary musicology – possibilities somewhat limited. Studying the music of Byzantine Empire, we must not overpass the problem of teretismata, prologoi and kratemata – questions that in some ways characterize musical art of Byzantium in 13th–15th centuries. The fifth chapter bears the title “Musical Transcription”. The system of the Byzantine music work is studied here. The substantial knowledge of Byzantine notational system seems to be inevitable for such research. The music expresses its concrete modality through the notation. Modality here means the musical adherence to the mode, i.e. scale. The neumes are transcribed to the modern notation using western system of transcription. This system had been published in Henry Tillyard’s booklet in 1935. However, the western understanding of the neumes and the ways of their transcription has been denied and condemned by the eastern Greek school. Since the transcribing results based on both ways are so diverse, the number of examples has been limited to minimum. The hypotheses that appeared in the course of research are summarized in the Conclusion. The comparative tables derived from the sources are located after the text. Appendices follow the next. The first place occupies rubrics of orthros as found in the musical manuscripts. In order to compare some other comparison tables are added. They present scheme of orthros that is looked at from diverse points of view. The table based on liturgical commentaries has been processed in the same way. Some examples of transcription are added at the very end of the work. This very part had to be the core of the work according to the initial objective. However, gaining all the information connected with the objective of work, this part has intentionally been reduced to a minimum of examples that would suffice to indicate innovative musical contribution noticeable in the era of the decline of Byzantine Empire, roughly a century before final fall of Constantinople.
