Cantare amantis est
K počiatkom psalmódie v prvých storočiach kresťanstva
PaedDr. Šimon Marinčák, PhD.
MARINČÁK, Š.: Cantare amantis est : To Early Psalmody in the First Centuries of Christianity. Teologický časopis, XI, 2013, 1, s. 5 – 17.
The present paper endeavors to survey basic elements of the early Christian liturgical chant. It draws from the selected writings of early Church fathers, where they describe current chant practice of time. This paper approaches discussed matter by using three elementary questions: ‘what’ was sung, ‘who’ sang it, and ‘how’ it was sung. Answers to these three questions shall point to the practical performance of early hymnody and psalmody of time, commonly known as the direct, responsorial, and antiphonal psalmodies.

WEYEL, B., WEIMER, T., HOFFMANN, C.: Biographie and Eschatology : Research to Funeral Preachings in Württemberg. Teologický časopis, XI, 2013, 1, s. 19 – 30.
Authors of the present paper explore funeral speeches delivered by preachers of the local evangelic church in Wurttemberg on the basis of five criteria: (1) a relationship between a kerigmatic part and biographical data; (2) rethorics: deployment of settled formulas versus search for new ways of expression, and innovative speeches; (3) a leading motif in kerigma: biography or a preaching text; (4) subjective eschatological views of individual preachers; (5) eschatological views penetrating funeral preachings. Based on the given research authors define five preaching types as well as one heterogenic group and in the end they make suggestions for a preaching praxis.
Timor mortis – kresťan a strach zo smrti
Pohľad svätého Augustína na problematiku kresťana zoči-voči smrti
Miloš Lichner SJ
LICHNER, M.: Timor mortis – the Christian and a Fear of Death : St. Augustine’s View of the Christian Facing Death. Teologický časopis, XI, 2013, 1, s. 31 – 45.
Death, the fear of death are not questions that we ask nowadays only. Even the first Christians felt that fear of death tests their faith. This paper will analyze a selection of st. Augustine’s treatise which deal with the issues of death, ageing and the fear of death. The Augustinian corpus gives us a view of the author’s train of thoughts from his opinion that a wise Christian does not fear death and that the fear of death is caused by weak faith, through the conviction that timor mortis is natural for people. Augustine’s opinion represents a change in pastoration of elderly people at the turn of the 4th and 5th century.
Panenstvo ako ideál kresťanského života v listoch sv. Hieronyma
Marcela Andoková – Kvetoslava Gyuriová
ANDOKOVÁ, M., GYURIOVÁ, K.: Virginity as the Ideal of Christian Life in St. Jerome’s Letters. Teologický časopis, XI, 2013, 1, s. 47 – 59.
Jerome’s letters are for the reader a precious source of knowledge of his views and ideas concerning the role he attributed, with regard to Christian perfection, to virginity, widowhood and marital life. For him, marriage was only a transitory state in contrast to virginity because even Eve, in the paradise, was a virgin and became mother only after having been driven out from Eden after the first fall. Though, in his letters, Jerome never claims that the marital state would be bad in itself, however, on his scale of sanctity he places marriage only after virginity and widowhood lived in sexual abstinence. The best model for virginity to be followed is in his view the example of God’s mother Mary, virgin and mother at the same time.
Keywords: Saint Jerome, virginity, widowhood, marriage, letters to virgins and widows, the first fall

HROBOŇ, B.: Selected Problems in Slovak Translations of Ps 51 and Proposals of Their Solutions. Teologický časopis, XI, 2013, 1, s. 61 – 67.
In spite of its importance and frequent use, the text of Ps 51 and its translations are sometimes obscure. This short study discusses seven such instances from various Slovak translations of Ps 51 that are potentially misleading for biblical understanding of such vital theological concepts as confession, repentance, or grace in the Old Testament. As shown from case to case, most of these renderings can be improved by considering the alternative options of the Hebrew syntax. The main point is to encourage the reader to consider other ways of understanding the text, and to appeal to the translators to pay close attention to possible misreadings and to prevent them whenever the Hebrew syntax allows.
