The new elements of the western thinking that have penetrated to Slovakia after the fall of the communism, have led the society to a moral confusion and cultural chaos. They started to reverse the values and deny rules in the name of democracy and liberalism. The pluralism of opinions have appeared hidden behind the words such as freedom and creativity. All these changes happened as a result of the new thinking called „postmodernism“. Postmodern effect has slowly appeared in various artistic and cultural fields, and it later went to social and political life and became part of contemporary philosophy.
In this work I tried to evaluate the effects of postmodernism on people and to find out if the postmodernism leads to the loose of the ethical and moral norms, or from the antagonism to the total intolerance. I will do it on the base of philosophical analysis.
I started my work by the collecting the material of various kinds, starting with various publications, articles, ending with the proceedings of various conferences etc. I tried to understand thoughts of the representatives of postmodernism, hence I studied their works in the Slovak translation. Later I searched for various evaluations and commentaries regarding the postmodernist effects. I have learned that the evaluations were very different – both the positive and negative. In order to be more objective I studied English, French and German literature as well, but I used mostly works of Polish authors. Their thoughts and evaluations of postmodernism are very clear and helped me a lot in process of my work. The works of Polish authors were especially those of Prof. Kiereś, Prof. Baran and Bronk; their clear standing point toward the problem of postmodernism influenced the process of writing of my work.
Examining the genesis of postmodernist effect, I decided to use the historical and analytical method. I tried to explain it on the base of a comparison of philosophical thinking in the single historical epochs with the thinking of main representatives of postmodernism. It was very difficult to find a continuity of postmodern thinking with the single historical epochs, therefore I used the epochs that were used by postmodernists as their ideological platform of their philosophy. It became obvious that postmodern thinking reacted on the previous modern epoch, and denied many its mistakes.
By using the historical and analytical method I did not want to list axiologically all of the characteristic signs of postmodern thinking, since the process of the postmodern effect itself is a subject to permanent changes of the thinking that alternate and mix with one another. Many characteristic elements of the postmodern effect were described by various commentaries. These results I tried to expand, replenish and point to the problems that are still opened in this problematic. On the base of historical and analytical method I reconstructed the postmodernism ontologically, anthropologically and culturally.
The work is divided systematically on three parts, each having its chapters and paragraphs. The first part is dedicated to the terminological aspect of postmodernism. There is also explained the basic philosophical characteristic and historical genesis of the postmodern thinking. The notion of postmodernism developed in three periods, when it gradually appeared in almost all spheres of social and cultural life. In the second chapter I list the basic philosophical elements of postmodernism: the deny of rationalism, universalism and totalitarism. In the third chapter I offer short biographies of important representatives of the postmodern thinking and the characteristic elements of their thinking.
The second part of my work speaks about the consequences of the postmodern thinking in the cultural, artistic, economical, social and political spheres. I explain the perils of the postmodern thinking that deny the objective criteria and esthetical theorems in the culture, and the pluralism of the forms becomes established. I point to the danger of the violent injecting of the freedom and creativity to the cultural life that can lead the culture to the crisis, and the art to the level of an antiart. They can destruct the society, or can make the morality relative, and to secularize the religion. The main task of this part of my work is not only to list all of the risks and dangers of the postmodern thinking, but also offer the solution of such status. I see the solution in the discerning of the postmodern effects: important from the unimportant, lasting from the vanishing, sounds from the noise, art from the trash, etc. Cultural and artistic institutions should form the authors of the esthetic and cultural objects, so that they may create their fruits in the accord with the truth, the good and the beauty.
In the third part I describe the perception of the postmodern thinking by its advocates and the reactions of its critics. Postmodern thinking reaches all people of contemporary society, hence I am trying to show the solution for the wide crowd of culture consumers, since they too must be able to look for their place and their aim. They must be able to advance, perceive, acculturate and to absorb all worth. They must not change their taste depending on the postmodern pressure. To render clearly the problematic of the postmodern effect, and at the same time to offer its distinct aprioristic signs is very difficult, because its clear picture is obscured by notional pluralism, various contrary affirmations of the representatives of postmodernism, their frequent antinominal thinking, as well as their different tongue. Since the genesis of postmodernism is not clear, the basic characteristic remains shrouded.
The results of my work are listed as follows:
• Postmodern thinking reacts to the epoch of modernism, points to its mistakes, denies modernistic laws and tries somehow to find the new ways of thinking and life of the society.
• Postmodern epoch is not the most correct solution of accumulated problems in the present social and cultural life, although the postmodernists claim that their thinking represents the new epoch in the culture and philosophy.
• Postmodernism brings with it the cultural relativism, civilized anarchism, and its last effect is the hidden form of the totalitarism.
Very interesting result in the given problematic is related to the overall social and cultural situation in Slovakia, where with the fall of communism the epoch of marxist ideology finished as well. There is much dispute about which ideological platform would substitute that of the marxism, and which thinking will start to be advertised and promoted in the social, political, and cultural spheres. Some thinkers in Slovakia turn their attention to the western culture, other want to copy eastern one, but only a few would raise the dangers of the postmodern effects in the society. I consider the postmodern effects to be dangerous for the Slovak culture and civilization, and I try to name those dangers unambiguously. I think that postmodernism is not the best solution for the development of Slovak culture and society, because it interfere negatively not only with both the culture and society, but also with the special spheres, art, morality, politics etc. Therefore it is very important to inform wide public with these dangers.
Although the evaluation of the postmodern thinking in Slovakia is only in its beginnings, the reflection to it can be divided into three groups: advocates, critics and indifferent.
The advocates accentuate the postmodern thinking as the only one that can save the manhood. They further divide into several groups regarding their reaction to the previous epoch: some try to deny the epoch of modernism, other see the postmodernism as a natural continuity to modernism, other claim that modernism has finished and the postmodernism is a very new starting point in the western philosophy and culture.
The critics of the postmodernism claim that such thinking is being manifested by the lack of a canon, central directive and logics of thinking. It is a kind of eclecticism, a collage, irony and ambiguity. It means the denial of an objective truth in philosophy, mixing of the styles in the art and a denial of the ideology of functionality and a geometrical purity of style.
Indifferent to the postmodern thinking are those, who stick on the tradition and do not accept anything new. They do not care about the solution of this problem. They optimistically suppose that the postmodernism will not have any influence on future generations and that everything will turn good.
It is obvious that under the influence of the new thinking movements there is going to be many tragedies, suffering and mistakes in our society yet. However, if we are able to discern the „signs of the times“, we might still except good signs of the future.
I strongly believe that even after such epoch of postmodernism a man will realize that in his heart he is not such evil, and that he is a higher spiritual existence, a transcendent one, similar to Him, from whom we know that there is a good Father, a lover of mankind. Our only task is to understand Him and accept Him.
